How to teach a dog to follow commands

If you are determined to teach a dog how to execute commands unconditionally, then you have to understand a few rules. Most dog breeders misbehave and then get disobedience, complete neglect, or even aggression from the pet. This can be avoided through regular classes, playing with a dog, praise for good behavior, and punishment for failing to obey commands. All these actions that will lead to an understanding between you and your quadrupedal friend, you will find out in this article.

The optimal age to start training

Experienced dogs advise starting training puppies in teams from a young age. From the first month, you have to call the little one a nickname, teach him to stop commands, teach him his place in the house, and teach him that you are his master and his leader – to teach him obedience. After the third month of life, teams are trained as adult dogs. Practice with a puppy every day, but don’t focus on the training itself. But remember, it’s just a puppy and he wants to play and fool around like a little kid. Let’s get the teams home from time to time on the way to the hangout and when he’s out running. In this case, the puppy will not accept your demands as obligations, but will gladly fulfill them. More eager to learn to do so when you encourage him properly.

Executing Positive Reinforcement Commands

In training, there are several working ways to reward a dog for correctly executing a command. Try to gain the obedience of the dog using positive reinforcements such as praise, delicacy, games, and other pleasant rewards.

1. Promotion of the delicacy.

For a dog to be more willing to do all your commands, you have to find the most delicious treat. For a properly executed command, which should always be given only once, you should reward the dog with a piece of his favorite food. It can be smoked sausage, sausage, or other treats, as long as it’s not a dog’s everyday food. Combine such rewards with praise.

2. Use of a clicker.

A clicker is a device that makes a faint sound when pressing a button. This clicking is used when it is necessary to let the dog know that he has correctly executed the command. This method excludes physical contact and makes it possible to develop in the animal a positive conditional reflex on the correct actions thereof. If a dog does something wrong, you have to wait for it to do the right thing and encourage it by pressing the clicker button. That way you’ll reinforce the dog’s desire to make the commands you need.

Saving time to train teams using negative stimuli

It’s a pretty quick way to teach a dog how to do all the commands right and obey at the lowest possible cost. It should be noted that, in punishing a dog with mechanical force: a pull of a leash or a stroke of vintage, there is no need to be cruel or aggressive. If your pet after the team «sit» starts to jump, wishing to play, it is necessary to jump the leash with simultaneous pressing on the croup of the dog to put it in place. If a dog falls off the spot you specified again, you need to increase the leverage on the leash and set it back. This is done until the dog realizes what he wants from him. When the pet fulfills the command, he should be rewarded with a treat and praise.

Be the dog’s leader

It is clear that while living in the owner’s house, the dog treats his family as a pack, and the head of the family perceives the pack as the leader. Therefore, according to the hierarchy, a dog can occupy a place in a chain. There are times when a weak-willed master or one of his family members becomes influenced by an animal. For example, a dog doesn’t make a fuss about a vacuum cleaner, so it starts barking, jumping on a car, and sometimes on a person. Master(s) turn off the dog’s hate device and, voila, the dog becomes the leader in the pack, imposing his opinion. Always be a leader to your barking friend. The success of your training will depend directly on whether you can assert your superiority in any setting and be the leader of the dog.

It’s a pretty complicated team, not a reward, but a punishment. We recommend training her after six months, when the puppy has grown up, responds to the nickname, has mastered the command «To me!» and trusts you.

It’s better to train on the street while walking on a leash. In this case, a lot of temptations – plus. Quietly walk with the puppy, and as soon as it reacts to the unwanted irritant – strictly say «Fu!» and do not stretch the leash. Continue your walk – and in a few steps give a command that the pet knows well so you can compliment him. We should not encourage «Fu!» to perform under any circumstances, but it is important that the puppy is distracted and relaxed after sudden stress.

Watch your tone – it doesn’t have to be fun or threatening, you don’t have to shout: speak strictly, but calmly, clearly. Repeat the command several times during the walk at intervals of approximately 15 minutes.

When a puppy has mastered the command, remove the leash – the dog must react only to the voice.

Remember: the «Fu!» command is a categorical ban. You cannot say «Fu!» and then allow the forbidden action. Do not use this command in situations where you can apply another one, for example, «Can not!» or «Dai!». «Fu!» is a command for extreme cases.
