Why do cats puff up their tails? the puffed-up tail is often a sign that the cat is scared or startled by something the cats use this trick to make themselves look bigger and stronger they do not always want to attack but they want their enemy to feel frightened but sometimes cat puffs up their tails while playing chasing something or in pretended fights with other cats, but humans do usually think that this signal looks funny and adorable.
